True Colours is all about chemistry. It is a body of work that has resulted from Pott’s exploration into the colour reactions that occur naturally in metals when they are extracted from the earth.
Through alchemic experimentation with chemical recipes and oxidation, Pott has refined colour palettes that are uniquely related to each metal he works with. In True Colours, this palette is harmoniously presented as a strikingly colourful series of metal plates, each displaying its own chemical formula.
As with other works by Pott, True Colours sensitively lays bare the nature of the material and reduces it to its very essence. In a ‘truth to materials’ he allows the innate quality of the material to come through, and in turn lets nature express itself. In doing so, he intuitively produces a work that sings – pure, simple and inexplicably satisfying.
True Colours was originally released as a large scale series in 2010. A smaller A5 scale version – True Colours Miniatures – has now been produced in collaboration with Found by James. This limited edition was first presented at the Salone del Mobile Milan in April 2012. The concept is transposed to his product design work in True Colours Shelves, which literally put the oxidised metal on display.
More recently, Lex Pott has explored chemical odidation in silver for Transcience, a mirror project developed in collaboration with Rotterdam-based designer David Derksen.
About Lex Pott
In his work, Pott returns to the origin of the materials he uses most: wood, stone and metal. He explores the boundaries between art and design, function and story, object and imagination.
Lex Pott also works in collaboration with other designers. His work can be found in exhibitions, museums and design showcases internationally. He also shares his design knowledge and experience through talks, seminars and workshops.
