Light is not so much something that reveals, as it is itself the revelation. James Turrell, artist
Dennis Parren’s exploration into light, colour and reflection fits perfectly within our Art of Design series. The CMYK Lamp series celebrates the mystery of light and perfectly combines design innovation with conceptual art aesthetics.
Parren’s design is all about light – without light, colour simply could not exist. Accordingly, the CYMK Lamp eloquently delivers a reminder that light is fundamental to our perception of colour.
You can’t really say ‘that chair is red’. Actually, the chair is reflecting red light while absorbing green and blue light. It is light that colours the world. My CMYK lamp plays with the mystery of light and colour.”
LED light breaks through the fine stainless steel frame of the CMYK Lamp to project interlacing lines of cyan, magenta and yellow onto walls and ceilings. The weightless design of the lamp is inspired by space science. Add to this the graphic registration marks used to align CMYK inks during the printing process. Overall, the pared back design ensures that the focus remains on the fascinating nature of the light itself.
Parren developed the CMYK Lamp whilst studying at the Design Academy Eindhoven. It was during the DAE graduation show in 2011 that Parren accidently discovered that the CMYK projections gave a 3-D effect. With the aid of 3D glasses, you get the impression that you are standing inside the lamp itself. This literally takes appreciation of this lighting design to a whole new dimension.
Another key design aim for Parren was to demonstrate what can be achieved with LED light. White LEDs are ubiquitous in modern lighting, where they simply serve as a compact and energy-saving replacement to the conventional light bulb. This is where Parren’s design work departs from the mainstream. His attention was drawn to the bright shadows cast by LED lights and their ability to emit light in different colours. Parren uses these properties to play with white light and create what he refers to as the ‘aesthetics of LED light’. In doing so, Parren is firmly making his mark on the world of lighting.
Following on from the initial design, Parren has now created the CMYK Corner lamp (as featured in the July 2012 MARKER® Investment monthly). Pared back to further reduce materials, the latest design has been minimised in size but delivers the same fascinating light effect. Earlier this year, CMYK Corner was presented by Parren alongside his RGB Galaxy light at Milan Design Week. Using Rapid Prototyping, Parren has now put the CMYK lamp into production independently.
We think the future looks particularly bright for this young Dutch designer.
