Wandschappen bring a unique dimension to our Art of Design theme through their intuitive blend of art, design and craft perspectives.
Sitting on a simple cupboard, a pot plant casts its shadow across an adjacent rug. In Wandschappen’s world, it is a sculptural felt plant on a cherry wood cabinet, and the shadow is cleverly crafted into a beautifully hand-tufted carpet.
Wandschappen’s art installation – At Home – breathes life into the everyday objects that people use to decorate their homes. Laying carpets and growing plants enables people to feel at home, and this is the concept this artwork conveys.
– At Home – was inspired by the Charlois area in Rotterdam, where thousands of people arrive every year in the hope of starting a new life. Charlois is home to visual artists and designers Nicole Driessens and Ivo van den Baar, and it is where they founded Wandschappen in 1999. Their unique view of the local area and the world at large is reflected in the intimate artworks and product designs they produce.
Alongside contemporary art concept and design process, materials and craftsmanship are central to Wandschappen’s work. Most of their projects involve hand-crafting, and they often work closely with other art, design and craft producers. – At Home – was created in close collaboration with Ora Pro Nobis, tufting specialists in Stekene, Belgium. Beautifully crafted in 35 colours, this piece has been produced as a limited edition of eight pieces.
The work also features an Alocasia plant from Wandschappen’s Feltplants series. Feltplants reflect the domestic plants typically found growing on Dutch apartment window sills. Each Feltplant is uniquely hand-crafted. Editions are always limited and each work is numbered and signed. Bold and sculptural, the Feltplants bring the notion of ‘feeling at home’ into contemporary living spaces, art galleries and architectural interiors.
As there seem to be no creative boundaries to the projects Wandschappen conceive, we look forward to their forthcoming projects with great interest.
Wandschappen is the studio of artists Nicole Driessens and Ivo van den Baar. They develop art projects in public spaces, as well as autonomous artworks. On the design side, they make prototypes and products for international designer labels, including Marcel Wanders Studio, Thomas Eyck, Moooi and DROOG. Waste materials from these projects are used to create design products under the Wandschappen label. The outlets for Wandschappen’s creative talents are diverse. Their work appears in international art and design galleries, as well as key international design shows.
